Debt is created when we borrow money from someone or something like a financial institution such as a bank. They make it easy for us by providing us with those cool plastic cards for swiping. If you look around in the world today, it seems like everybody has one. They look like a bunch of Credit Card Ninjas out there swiping junk. The problem is that we are spending money that we don't own – it's other people's money. We're basically saying that we will pay them back and give them a little extra for letting us use it. They're hoping we won't be able to so that they can charge us more in penalties and whatever else they can put at the end of our credit card statements every month.
This creates a problem in the marriage because one or both parties are borrowing more than what the couple earns in wages. They're broke because they're overspent. Now they are working harder to pay back loans. This is stressful and it shouldn't be this way. God's plan is simple:
Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. - Romans 13: 8
The only debt we should owe is the debt of love. We shouldn't borrow, except for the purchase of a house (which according to the Old Testament, the loan should have been a 7 year note without interest – read Deuteronomy 15).
The key is to be content with what you have.
For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. - 1 Timothy 6: 7-10
